Abstract

This article on the importance of motivation of learning French Language as a foreign language explores the different factors that motivate learners of French as a foreign language. We used the qualitative and quantitative research methodology in carrying out this research. A questionnaire was administered to a focus discussion group among the chosen samples. Results indicated that motivation stems from learners’ need to learn French as a means of having access to French-speaking regions or countries and platform for daily interactions. Other factors as our findings showed are instrumental, that is having a good mark and or using French in seeking employment. These instrumental motivations help learners’ progress, as each strives for the best. In sum, the research concludes that motivation in its different forms is the corner stone of the teaching and learning of French as a foreign language.
