Abstract

Foreign direct investment (FDI) has a positive effect on household consumption and is a source of economic growth. The objective of this article is to offer elements to verify this assertion. In other words, it aims to determine the impact of foreign direct investment on the level of consumption and living conditions of populations.

The study focuses on a sample composed of the 8 WAEMU countries between 2000 and 2020. Empirical verification through the DOLS (Dynamic Least Squares) estimator shows results that support that the increase in foreign direct investment has a positive impact and significant on final household consumption in the WAEMU zone. However, inflation remains a limiting factor for the level of household consumption.

This result can contribute to encouraging the economic policy choices and decisions of the WAEMU Commission in terms of FDI and economic stabilization.
